Pool Efficiency

The Xtreme Energy Makeover home has a small pool filtered by a standard efficiency, single-speed, original 2-horsepower pumping and filtration system. Energy-efficient, variable-speed pumps provide significant energy savings over older equipment.

Pool Heating

There are a number of options for heating pools. The most energy inefficient way is with a natural gas-fired pool heater, while the most efficient is simply covering the pool with a "solar pool cover". Solar water heating is also an option. A solar pool cover is the best way to go as not only does it keep heat in the pool but it also reduces water evaporation and reduces the amount of chemicals needed to maintain your pool's health.

Solar Electric

PhotoVoltaic Solar System

A photovoltaic solar electric system was installed on the Xtreme Energy Makeover house. This 3.1 kilowatt direct current Akeena Solar system is expected to generate over 4,000 kWhs a year at this location.

Solar System Description

  • Size: 3.1kWDC
  • 18 SunTech STP170S-24/Ab-1 solar modules, w/Andalay integrated mounting system
  • 1 SMA SB3000US (240V) inverter(s)

System Benefits

PhotoVoltaic Solar System

  • The 3.1 kWDC system will generate approximately 4,252 kWh annually.
  • Annual utility electric expenses will be reduced by approximately 55.2%
  • Payback period - 7.1 years.
  • This system should provide a pre-tax Rate of Return of 21.5%.
  • 1st-year savings in utility electric expense will be $1,192
  • The appraised value of your property will increase by approximately $23,837 as a result of your investment in a PV system.

Environmental Benefits

  • It is estimated that over the 30-year system life this system will reduce the follow green house gases by:
  • CO2 - 82,581 pounds (over 41 tons)
  • NOx - 76 pounds
  • SO2 - 22 pounds
